I was a great pleasure to go off the usual European Dragon
circuit for a visit to the Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia,
Naples, Southern Italy. The yacht club has a small but active
Dragon fleet with some lovely classic Dragons and a number
of visitors also turned up to take part in the event.
The Gulf of Naples has a long tradition of Dragon sailing;
the venue for the
1960 Olympic regatta, when the gold medal was taken by the
Crown Price Constantine of Greece, with the Italian team Antonio
Cosentino taking the bronze medal.
The bay provides a beautiful and spectacular sailing venue
with Vesuvius as the backdrop and interesting tourist sites
nearby (Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri and the Amalfi coast).
The moderate breeze and sunshine allowed the fleet to complete
a good race series and I was pleased that Team "Tigger"
(Thomas and Nicola Wilton and
myself) won the event.
The Yacht Club is keen to encourage the Dragons to visit
them and rebuild their Dragon fleet, I can highly recommend
a visit in the future
